Verizon employee leaks black and red employee-only DROID RAZR

droid razr limited edition Verizon employee leaks black and red employee only DROID RAZR

A Verizon employee has leaked Verizon’s plans to offer an employee-only black and red version of the DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX. In addition to some Kevlar paint work, there will be a “LIMITED EDITION” tag permanently affixed to the front of the phone, right next to the Verizon logo. Most importantly though, the phones will be handsomely discounted, a 16GB RAZR will be $99 and a 32GB MAXX variant will run $199.

Who doesn’t love a fresh paint job on an already-released phone? This is somewhat of a hot-button topic. Some people love it, because they get a piece of that exclusivity pie without having to pre-order or stand in line. However those who did pre-order or stand in line often times hate it, especially if it’s a color that they would have preferred.

Fortunately in this case, nobody really has anything to gripe about. Of course there’s always the obvious, that this phone won’t be publicly available, so perhaps everyone can just gripe evenly. Regardless, the phones are reported to launch in April, which means two things. We can probably expect a significant RAZR price drop by April, and we can expect a flurry of limited edition RAZRs to be floating around on Craigslist and EBay for more than any sane person should spend on a smartphone.

Motorola RAZR Developer Edition on its way to the UK soon

Inside Motorola 560x106 Motorola RAZR Developer Edition on its way to the UK soon

Isn’t it just wonderful when big corporate companies think kindly of us homebrew rabble-rousers? Motorola has announced that UK customers will soon be able to purchase a fully unlocked version of the DROID RAZR. The phone will be sold for €499.00 off-contract.

Available through the Motorola shop on pre-order, the new RAZR will be otherwise identical to all the other RAZR XT910s that are out there. Everything we know and love about the RAZR remains unchanged, from the 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, to the 8MP camera, to the Kevlar backing, and 4.3-inch Gorilla Glass-covered screen. Firmware-wise however, this phone is very different and it should be about a billion times easier to install CyanogenMod or any other non-OEM software.

As far as US-based geeks with a predisposition to tinkering are concerned, Motorola hasn’t forgotten you but is also rather non-committal, saying only,

In the coming months, we also plan to introduce an unlockable developer device in the United States through MOTODEV, Motorola’s global developer network. Stay tuned to Motorola’s Developer site for additional info.

I know it’s not much for us Yanks, but at least it’s something, and having something is better than being totally ignored, right?

Purple DROID RAZR is available now, $199.99 on-contract

Purple RAZR 560x280 Purple DROID RAZR is available now, $199.99 on contract

Back in November Verizon proved two things with the DROID RAZR. First, that it could line up a lot of ones—1-11-11 at 11:11 a.m.—and second, that Cornings Gorilla Glass combined with Kevlar backing makes for an awesome phone. Now Verizon is proving that it can mix colors as well.

The purple DROID RAZR is now available for $199 on contract, same as the standard RAZR. This release comes as no surprise, being announced alongside the RAZR MAXX at CES. There will still be some black around the screen and of course the Kevlar will still be Kevlar, so once again the new color scheme is more of a nice accent than a full-body paint job. As was the case with the white DROID RAZR, all the specs will remain the same.

Just as a reminder, the DROID RAZR is Motorola’s current flagship device whose biggest claim to fame is its 7.1mm thinness, which has of course been one-upped by a few other manufacturers. The rest of the specs, while no longer mind-blowing, are still respectable at the very least, with 4G LTE from Verizon, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen, 16GB of internal storage, 1GB of RAM, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, an 8MP 1080p rear camera, a 2MP 720p front camera, and all the usual fixings such as HDMI, WiFi, microSD, and so on.

DROID RAZR coming to Fido in Canada on January 10

droid razr post image1 560x302 DROID RAZR coming to Fido in Canada on January 10

For any North American smartphone user, the DROID RAZR is an awesome phone that deserves to be mentioned among any carrier’s top three phones. For the Canadian carrier Fido, who currently only has three smartphones not made by Apple—the Sony Ericsson Xperia pro, the LG Optimus 2x, and the BlackBerry Curve 9360—the DROID RAZR will simply dominate.

The announcement of the imminent launch was made without much pomp or circumstance by Motorola Canada on Twitter yesterday, “Motorola RAZR is slicing into @Fidomobile! You can pick up your own impossibly thin #RAZR at Fido on January 10.”

While I appreciate Twitter for its ability to easily transfer breaking news and support between companies and their customers, by nature it doesn’t provide much information. So as of right now we have no available information on pricing and since the RAZR is so far above Fido’s other offerings, we don’t even have guesses for you. But pre-launch pricing or none, in a mere 6 days Fido customers can get their hands on Motorola’s Flagship. Now how about a white version, eh?

I’m dreaming of a white…DROID RAZR?

droid razr white cropped Im dreaming of a white...DROID RAZR?

The DROID RAZR will receive a new paint job on December 15, when it will become available in white at Verizon stores. This seems primarily to be a publicity stunt by Verizon to promote the new DROID XYBOARD-but you’re reading this right now so it must be working.

In the spirit of holiday sales, Verizon has announced that if you buy a new RAZR with a new 2-year agreement, it will give you $100 off the price of a new DROID XYBOARD. Just don’t forget that the tablet will require its own 2-year agreement in addition to the phone.

The white RAZR sure is pretty. I actually like it better than the original black RAZR. The Kevlar on the back—as you can see—will retain its native black pattern. So it’s not a pure white phone but they do say that contrasting colors makes things pop.

For those of you who have been too busy with the holidays to notice, the DROID RAZR is Motorola’s current US flagship. Measuring in at 7.1mm at its thinnest point it was originally the “world’s thinnest smartphone” when it released on 11-11-11 at 11:11 a.m. More than one phone has bested that 7.1mm mark in the past month, most recently the Fujitsu Arrows.

Even though it is no longer the thinnest smartphone around, the RAZR is still a very exciting phone. We’re looking at a 1.2GHz Cortex-A9 dual-core processor, with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a 4.3-inch Gorilla Glass screen with 256ppi. Also included is Bluetooth 4.0, 4G LTE, a 2MP front-facing camera that can provide 720p recording as well as a 8MP 1080p shooter in the back.

Pick up the Droid Bionic for $120, or just win a RAZR for free

Bionic or RAZR 560x250 Pick up the Droid Bionic for $120, or just win a RAZR for freeAmazon is currently offering the Motorola Droid Bionic for just under $120 with a two-year agreement. Now $120 isn’t exactly cheap, but when you consider that just two short months ago the much-heralded Bionic was launched for $300 as Verizon and Motorola’s new flagship, those one hundred and twenty greenbacks sound a whole lot more inviting.

Before you go swiping your virtual credit card, there are three things worth considering here: First, the Bionic has been riddled with software issues — just try doing a search online. Second, we are only days away from the in-store release of the RAZR–which is better in pretty much every way except price–and will be $299 on-contract.

Finally, for those of you—like me—who would really, really like to get a new, awesome phone but don’t have $120, let alone $300, to drop on it, the Droid Does webpage is offering a free-to-enter sweepstakes in which they are going to give away six free RAZRs. You even get to play a little video game and involve your “fellow operatives” on Facebook.

It’s really a genius marketing ploy on Verizon’s part; the more people you get to come play the game, the easier it gets for you. And with the ability to win the game—and thereby get another sweepstakes entry—one hundred times per day, you can bet a lot of people will be begging all of their friends to help them out. You never know, this just might be the new Mafia Wars. The contest ends on November 10, and winners will be notified “on or about” November 14.

So in summary, these are your options: pick up the Bionic for $120 and wait two months for the software fixes, wait less than a week and spend $300 on a RAZR, or pet your rabbit’s foot, wish upon a star, and hope you win a free RAZR. The choice is yours, good luck!
