Windows Phone Tango Windows Phone Tango update set for spring 2012?

According to DigiTimes and ChinaTimes.com, Compal Communications will manufacture Windows Phone Mango handsets for Nokia. President and CEO Ray Chan says his company is the first Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) to sign a licensing deal with Microsoft.

As part of the deal, Compal Communications will manufacture Windows Phone 7.1 and Windows Phone 7.5 handsets. The former is commonly referred to as “Mango,” but the latter’s codename is new: “Tango.” The name ends in an “o,” so it is in line with the standard Windows Phone update naming conventions.

Previous reports have referred to the fall 2012 update as Windows Phone 8 “Apollo”, so we can only assume that Tango is another interim update similar to NoDo. If so, it will probably be released sometime in spring 2012 and include a few new improvements and bug fixes. NoDo, however, barely incremented the version number. Tango must have something that justifies the jump from 7.1 to 7.5, rather than 7.1.x or 7.2.

Keep in mind that this information comes from one of Microsoft’s partners. The Tango update should be treated as a rumor until it is actually confirmed by Microsoft.
