World Mobile Congress (MWC) takes place at the end of February, but is missing a press event from Samsung. Given the company’s penchant for big splashes, we can safely assume this means no major device announcements from Samsung at MWC. Funny thing is, rumors are flying that a late March—March 22, to be precise—release is going to happen. Samsung denies it, but that’s what makes rumors so exciting.
What we do know in terms of timing is that Samsung has promised a short announcement to release date ratio, and that the S III will land before the middle of the year. A May release sounds pretty solid to me but of course, to quote a famous Disney movie, “That’s a pie-crust promise; easily made, easily broken!”
The most solid-sounding spec rumors are from last October, believe it or not. Thanks to Mr. Anonymous Blurrypic who claimed to have internal Samsung pictures, we should be looking at drool-worthy 720 p 4.6-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, which happens to already be in place on the S II HD LTE, a possible 1.8GHz dual-core Exynos processor, a whopping 2GB of RAM, a 12MP camera, and of course Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich(ICS).
While these specs are entirely unsubstantiated, they do have a ring of truth to them, and are certainly plausible with today’s technology. What seems a little less possible are the further claims that the device will be 7mm thick, or perhaps even thinner to vie for the “world’s thinnest” title. But hey, miracles do happen.
